What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy (SWT) is a scientifically proven ultrasonic treatment for relieving foot pain and repairing injury.
SWT is simple, effective and non-invasive and is one of our most popular treatments for persistent foot pain.
Our patients have had positive outcomes from SWT particularly in situations where they’ve had no success with traditional treatments such as heat and ice, supportive footwear, massage and strengthening exercises.
How does Shockwave Therapy work?
High-energy acoustic wave pulses are emitted through a hand-held device directed at the area of injury or chronic pain. These sound waves expand as they travel inside the body, increasing blood flow to the affected area and stimulating repair and regeneration of the soft tissue, bones and tendons. SWT also promotes the formation of new blood vessels, stimulates collagen product and reverses chronic inflammation.
SWT has been successful in the treatment of many conditions, including:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Chronic Achilles heel pain
- Morton’s Neuroma
- Peroneal tendonitis
- Patella tendonitis
- Foot spurs
Benefits of SWT
- Quick, non-invasive and fast-acting
- Reduces pain
- Eases inflammation
- Stimulates the body to heal itself naturally
What does it feel like?
The sensation felt during shockwave therapy can be described as a “Flicking, Snapping or Pulsing”. The intensity can be adjusted according to tolerance of the patient. The treatment itself only lasts a few minutes.
What to expect after Treatment
Some patients may experience exacerbated symptoms after treatment, but this only lasts 24 hours. Patients usually feel better and an improvement in pain levels are seen. There can be redness or bruising 1-2 days after treatment, however these resolve a few days after treatment.
